Well after a short break, we moved and have now set up again so Things is back, this week there is a variety of items for you to look at, with the lead story revloving around E commerce, and the promise of a level playing field for all new entrants into the Net. Or is it.

NEW MONSTERS IN THE DEEP

There are 47 large (above 2 metres) new species still to be found in the oceans, according to a new statistical analysis by Dr Charles Paxton of the Animal Behaviour Research Group at Oxford University. Using well-known sampling techniques, and fish data from 1830-1995, he was able to estimate the upper limit of species that remain undiscovered. PALM GOES FOR WEB

Palm Computing unveiled its PalmPilot VII handheld which lets you obtain information from the Web via a wireless connection (though it’s restricted to 260 areas in the US). It features "web clipping", described as way of extracting only specifically needed information from a site. The sub-$800 PalmPilot won’t be available till 1999. See http://www.palmpilot.com/

 


FIRST CYBER CLINIC

Psychoanalyst Dr Russell Razzaque has launched a cycberclinic, claiming it will work well on the Net because it provides a relaxed environment and provides emotional space between doctor and patient. See http://www.cyberanalysis.com

 


WATER ON EUROPA?

New images by the Galileo probe of the Jovian moon Europa released today strengthen speculation that Europa contains liquid water under its frozen surface. The pictures show golden-brown ridges extending across smooth blue ice, suggesting the existence of cryo-volcanoes pumping water from the interior to the surface, where it promptly freezes into huge ridges. Galileo has also snapped pictures of a huge white oval storm on Jupiter, recently formed when two white ovals that have persisted since the 1930s joined into one.
